Farmers Market Opens Downtown In Shafter
The Farmers Market will operate Wednesdays 3 to 6 p.m. in the new downtown parking lot at James Street and Central Avenue as a joint effort by the Shafter Downtown Parking and Business Improvement District and the Kern Farmer's Market Association. State expectations aim for autumn continuation. Two Catholic Social Services drug programs Kaleidoscope and Women’s Drug Counseling have extended hours, Monday to Thursday 1 to 7 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 558 Central Avenue. phone 746-2763.

MFAD approves sewer rate increase at Minter Field airport district
Airport directors approve a rate rise for sewer service based on 70 cents per 1000 gallons with a sliding scale for 30 district connections. Old rates from 1985 were a flat 2.25 dollars. MFAD cites rising operating costs, maintenance needs, and proposed revenue of about 68 thousand dollars to fund modernization and reserves. Public hearing scheduled for July 24.

Hearing set in girls death in Shafter court
A restitution hearing is scheduled Friday at 9 a.m. in Shafter Municipal Court for Stephanie Rodriguez, 30, over a traffic accident that killed 22-year-old Dana of Shafter. Judge Gary Ingle noted the death was a misdemeanor, and Rodriguez was given 400 hours of community service, a $1,275 fine, and probation. Friday’s session will determine any restitution to Dana’s surviving family.

Moonlight mayhem sparks multiple Shafter crashes
A series of three-vehicle crashes last week caused minor injuries and sparked questions about the full moon's effect on driving. On July 24 at 3:40 p.m. Dora Estrada and passenger Maria De LaRosa were hospitalized after a three-vehicle collision at James Street and State Avenue. Estrada's Dial-A-Ride van sustained major front damage. Doris Nickel's Lincoln had minor damage. Raul Cortez Sr.’s Oldsmobile had minor damage. No citations were issued. On July 26 at 12:32 p.m. at Lerdo and Central Valley highways a 1989 Chevrolet pickup driven by Rafael Reyna Jr. collided with a 1989 pickup driven by Leaster Miles, with a 1987 Cadillac driven by Jack Woodrow sustaining minor damage. Reyna Jr. and Miles were cited for front-end, major-damage crashes after Miles allegedly ran a red light.

Storm drain project under way in Shafter
Shafter begins a $234,190 storm drain contract to Floyd Johnson Construction Co of Clovis. A 48 inch line will run along Minter Avenue from Manuel to Elm Street then along Elm to Lerdo Highway. Construction should finish in early September with full street resurfacing after. Temporary detours will affect Lerdo Highway and James Street traffic during work.
