Kern County Assessor Reports Valuations Dip by 3 Million
County Assessor J. H. Hanks told the board of supervisors that Kern County land and property assessments fell to 595,858,300 a drop of 3,270,180 from 1958 59. Exemptions totaled 20 543 010 up 294 140 with 18 352 veterans 30 welfare institutions 20 parochial schools and 407 churches receiving exemptions. Mineral rights including oil and mining declined by just over 30 million while personal property values fell by more than 5 percent. land and improvements rose by nearly 33 million.

Maple School Names New Full Time Teacher
The new full time Maple School faculty member for the coming year is Arlene Ehrhorn, a former Maple and Wasco High School student who will teach first grade. She prepared at Bakersfield Residence Center and Fresno State College and completed a summer session there. Her prior teaching included Beardsley and Mount Vernon Schools in Bakersfield, with strong supervisor recommendations. On Saturday she and her mother left for a month long vacation at their Mount Herman summer home.

Farm Bureau May Lose Water Priority
California Farm Bureau officials warned at a western regional Tucson conference that agriculture could lose its irrigation water priority as population grows. Charles C. Butler of the American Farm Bureau predicted the farm supported population would drop from 12 percent to as low as 5 percent in 40 years, weakening agricultural influence on water allocations. He urged comprehensive management of water resources to relieve the pressure.

Born December 25, 1867 in Missouri he had lived in California 10 years and Kern County 3 years. Interment in Shafter Cemetery. Survivors include wife Pearl Mae of Shafter son Alvin S. Skaggs of San Gabriel daughter Delvie Wooten of Arkansas and sister Ina Harman of Michigan. Reverend Lloyd Smith of Reedley officiated at Armstrong Mortuary services.

Enterlines Rescued After Night Afloat on Isabella Lake
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Enterline of Shafter and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Mann spent July 21 at Isabella Lake. A storm trapped the Enterlines in trees after their outboard failed to start. Rescue came around midnight by a motor patrol boat guided by Mann. The incident ends with a warning to carry signalling devices on boats.

Shafter Adopts Record 1959 1960 Budget
The Shafter City Council approves a 46 924.00 budget for 1959 60 with most of the rise in capital outlays. Estimated city revenue is 232 420 excluding a 23 607 gas tax. City Clerk Bill Johnston says gas tax funds will be removed from the budget. Last year capital outlays were 21 495 with 21 780 10 spent. new plan forecasts 34 875.

County Fires Show Decline In 1959 First Half
