Janice Luker, a 5'5" brown eyed brunette, won the Miss Shafter crown in the annual Shafter Water Show beauty contest held after the 11th annual event at the city recreation pool. Bonnie Jones placed third, Barbara Robinson was second, Phyllis Smith celebrated her 18th birthday, and Rita Moore competed with plans to pursue education.

Funeral services for Lena Wiens set for Thursday
Mrs Lena Wiens 73 wife of George Wiens will have services in the Mennonite Brethren Church Thursday morning July 23 Reverend Henry Dick will conduct. The Shafter resident for ten years is survived by her husband two daughters Mrs William Siemens and Mrs Leonard Johnson of Shafter three sons Wiens of Reedley Henry and Calvin Wiens of Wide Kansas one brother John Thiesen of Detroit and Pete Thiessen of Clinton Oklahoma and 14 grandchildren. Armstrongs Mortuary is in charge with burial in Shafter cemetery.

Burglar and Check Artist at Work
Nine or ten bad checks linked to John Peters of Shafter were passed in Wasco and Shafter after Peters’ home was burglarized on July 17. The man using the alias Roy Mason and other names cashed the checks, totaling about $400, at Hitchcock’s Auto Parts Johnson Neuman’s and Kelley’s Market. A detailed description was given to police, noting a 45 year old man, 5'11" tall, 175 pounds with a husky build and darkened teeth. the suspect fled Kelley’s Market and left remaining checks, later recovered in a canal after a near capture.

Thieves Active Over Week End in Shafter Store
Thieves raided the Smart and Final Store at 148 Tral Avenue Shafter over the weekend. Items reported stolen include a Zeiss Ikon camera and lens light meter pen lens, three portable mixers, six irons, six watches, and an electric shaver found at the exit. Entry was gained by lifting a cooler near the alley and exiting through the damaged holes.

Swimming Champions To Meet July 24
Kern County swimming championships will be held Friday July 24 at Bakersfield College Pool starting at 10 am. A total of 45 events are planned for five classes for both girls and boys with Open Divisions. Medals go to first place in each class and ribbons to places two through four. Admission is free, public invited. The Kerr County Diving Championships follow Saturday July 25 at North of the River Pools at 10 am.

Smokey Bear Reading Club Draws 179 Shafter Youths
