The City of Shafter introduces Ordinance No 20 to levy assessments and collect taxes. The assessor will issue statements under oath, subpoenas may be issued, and fines for noncompliance apply. An August equalization session will set tax rates, with notices published and a September levy, plus a budget hearing scheduled for August 1, 1938 at Rio Bravo School.
The City Council of Shafter will sit as Board of Equalization at City Hall to rectify assessments for 1938. First meeting Monday August 8 1938 at 8 PM with daily sessions. Hearing to be held before the district board at 8 PM August 1 1938 in Richland School. Taxpayers may appear and object to the proposed items. Signed L Healy for Schools.

Notary Merwin W Hunt certifies the filing date June 30 1938 and seals the document with commission through March 27 1941. The note includes a quoted line about belonging to the intelligentsia.
A Union Congregational church committee met at Mrs. O. T. Olson’s home to map fall sessions with enhanced religious education. They plan new hymnals, more teachers, special worship services, and consider forming a young peoples’ orchestra. Attendees included Mesdames Olson, Bobst, Lindquist, Eckmann, and Rev. Alfred Chandler.
