Construction Begins on Shafter High Gym Addition
Construction of the Shafter high school gymnasium addition, adjoining the dress ing rooms, is planned to start in September with a $72 461 PWA allotment. Bids are expected to open early September and work to begin mid month. The 75 by 105 foot space will add a 65 by 25 stage and chair seating to use as an auditorium with improved acoustics and insulation.

Union Spuds New Well In Shafter Field
Union Oil spudded its fifth well in the Shafter field, Kernco 5-34, reaching 1,512 feet as casing was cemented. The new unit joins two producing wells from Union, while a sixth project is planned after 4-34 finishes. Superior cuts drilling as Bull property work progresses slowly.

Early Vineyards Expect Strong Grape Harvest in District
Growers report good fruit with 400 lugs per truck headed to San Francisco for sale on the fresh fruit market. Grapes test at 18 to 19 and a quarter Brix. Picking will continue until harvest with an average 500 lugs daily. The 10 acre vineyard is early ripening due to sandy soil, but yields are less than heavier soils. General picking may start in two weeks depending on weather. District harvest expected at three tons of raisins or 10 tons of green grapes.

Shafter Corcoran Road Link Set for September Start
Plans call for seven miles of new road from Earlimart Alpaugh road south to Kern county line to connect Shafter and Corcoran. The project, announced by Tulare County official Jay G. Brown after a Visalia meeting, will include grading and multiple bridges and fills. Once finished it will divert traffic from Route 99 and shorten trips for west side motorists to Hanford and Fresno.

Spud Growers Cooperative reviews first season activity
The Shafter-Wasco Potato Growers Cooperative met at Wasco Grange hall to hear a report on the season. Secretary J W Nickel said more than 200000 sacks or 700 cars of spuds were washed and shipped in 1938. President Z C Bartel led the meeting as plans for future activity were discussed. The group aims to ship potatoes, supply sacks and fertilizer, and cut selling costs while improving consumer returns.

Wildcat crew works fishing for 7000 feet of drill stem
Standard Oil wildcat No. 181 between Lerdo and Shafter faced a 7000 foot loss of drill stem after a deep cave in. Crew hooked the end but lacked equipment. new fishing tools ordered from Bakersfield with expected completion by week end. Drilling may resume toward 11000 feet with Vedder sand potential and uncertain coring results.
