Richland School District loses 90 625 in its 1950 51 assessed evaluation bringing total to 24 329 725. County Assessor J H Hanks notes 24 of 63 districts fell. Nearby Buttonwillow Lerdo Maple Wasco gain while Rio Bravo slips.
Mrs. Marie Duke of Bakersfield announces the engagement of her daughter Miss Melba Dean Harrington to Albert B. Carter Jr. of Shafter. Albert Carter is known in Shafter and Wasco and works for an oil company. Harrington studied in Oklahoma and Bakersfield.
An editorial warns the San Joaquin Valley faces famine and economic collapse without a sufficient water system. It argues depleted runoff, deepening wells, and rising costs threaten farming, urging Central Valley Project water and fair district distribution to sustain the valley’s economy.

Shafter Chamber heard Alex Nordholm of Fresno describe the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District and the Central Valley Project. He warned that groundwater depletion persists and that CVP development could lower pumping costs, subsidize irrigation, and spur valley economic stability through new credits and lands.

Ralph De Palma entertained Rotarians and sons at a luncheon meeting with an informal talk on his 27 years in auto racing. He claimed wins including the Indianapolis 500 and many other events, and showcased a film of the 1949 Indianapolis 500. Dr. John Revell presided.
Abbie Boese 37, a Shafter truck driver, drowned around 1 30 p m Sunday July 23 at Silicops Lake Oregon his body recovered Thursday morning. Surviving sister Mrs Dick Buller Route 7 Bakersfield and other relatives in Bakersfield and Rosedale. WWII veteran employed by Ernest Adamson Trucking Co. Flickinger and Janzen Funeral Home to handle arrangements.
Rio Bravo Community will host a watermelon feed Friday night July 28 at 7. The pot luck menu features sandwiches and salad with the center supplying the watermelon. Mrs. W F Blatt enberg is supper hostess and Miss Irene Sade will lead entertainment after the seed spitting contest.
