Brief Session For Council on Monday Evening
In a brief meeting the City Council approved a contract with Thurman Construction for hauling dirt from the Hudson tract at 10 cents per ton up to 2500 dollars. They postponed a decision on a retaining wall in the Hofman Tract. Fire Chief Ratzlaff was authorized to buy a new Civil Defense alarm for 325 dollars. Councilman Atkinson reported on Don and Lorraine Christensen's mobile park variance request and noted the Recreation Commission finished its season. The council approved a 1500 dollar James Street overlay from Lerdo to Euclid and sent a letter to Ida Mae Comfort, widow of Herbert Comfort, founder of the Shafter Press. Comfort died in San Miguel at 80.

SP/4 James E. Brown age 19 of Shafter California was killed July 17 while cleaning his M 16 rifle on active duty in Vietnam. Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday at Agee Family Funeral Home chapel Shafter with full military honors. Burial at Shafter Memorial Park. Brown born November 28 1947 in Earle Arkansas moved to Shafter in 1960 and enlisted in 1965. He survived by parents three brothers a sister and maternal grandfather plus several uncles and aunts.

Hunter Safety Course Set by City Police in July
The City Police will run a Hunter's Safety course in two sessions on Thursday and Friday July 27 and 28 at the Council Chambers City Hall. Shafter officers teach the class from 7 to 9 pm for hunters aged 10 to 17, who must complete the course before turning 18 to obtain a license.

Planning Commission to Rule on Zone Change August 15
The Shafter Planning Commission held a large hearing at the Veterans Memorial Hall on West Ash Street to decide on a zone change request from R-1 to a mobile home friendly zoning for the old County Park. Donand Lorraine Christensen, who bought the property from Richland School District, presented plans via attorney John Kelley. The commission will announce its decision at the regular meeting on Tuesday August 15. Herbert G Comfort editor and publisher of the San Miguel Banner died July 15 in San Miguel. Born in Canada he edited his first newspaper at 16 and spent 64 years in journalism, earning wide respect as a lifelong newspaperman.

Publisher Herbert Comfort Dies Former Shafter Publisher
Herbert George Comfort 80 longtime publisher of the San Miguel Banner died July 15 with funeral July 18 in Paso Robles. He published the Shafter Press and Progress in the 1930s and 1940s and later the Banner since 1959, with earlier credits including the Paso Robles Star and other California papers. He is survived by his wife Ida Mae and three sisters, and was active in CNPA and local business groups.
