Scouts of Troop 53 Plan Camping Trip Next Week
Boy Scouts from Troop 953 will depart Saturday morning for a week at Huntington Lake to work on merit badges and ranks. Scoutmaster Jack McMeans and Robert Merz will stay until Wednesday, with John Bingham and Danny Ballard joining later to relieve them. The 20 scouts, sponsored by the Shafter Rotary Club, include Bruce Camp and 18 others.

The Maple Elementary School District board accepted Clyde Johnston’s resignation at a noon meeting on Wednesday July 26. Johnston has led Maple for ten years and will become superintendent of the Maricopa Unified School District serving about 500 students from kindergarten through high school.

Juveniles Charged With Burglary Of Shafter Drug Store
Juveniles Rawl Aleman and Shaf ter Regalade, 17 and 16, both of Wasco, were arrested by Shafter Police and charged with burglary of Stringham's Shafter Drug Store after a window was broken on James Street. Police arrived after a late night alert from Bakersfield resident Johnny Huddleson. Aleman was arrested at 1 41 a.m. and Regalade at 6 45 a.m. Both were booked and taken to Bakersfield Juvenile Hall awaiting court action. a typewriter stolen from the store was recovered.

State Board Announces 1967 Tax Increases
Sacramento The State Board of Equalization announces two tax increases in the 1967 tax act. The first raises the state sales and use tax from 3 to 4 percent, effective August 1, making combined state and local rates 5 percent. The new rate applies to all taxable retail sales on and after August 1.
