Shafter City Council honors locals and approves ordinance changes
At the July 17 2001 council meeting Shafter recognizes Joe Kirk for 36 years of service and commends Police Department officers for rescuing a 13 year old abducted near Richland Junior High. Council first reads revised ordinance 472 now 532 permitting limited outdoor display on private property and proposes 116 new pole mounted signs plus three median signs near Shafter Airport as Lerdo and Central Valley Highway cross streets get new signage. Council Youth Council and officials plan attendance at the League of California Cities Conference.

California cuts VLF rebates as 67.5 percent reduction takes effect
Governor Davis signs emergency Senate Bill 22 ending rebate checks for the 67.5 percent VLF cut. Beginning July 1 2001 the DMV will deduct most of the reduction from renewal fees rather than mail rebates. About 12 million checks worth $730 million were planned if all rebates were issued.

Escape attempt at Shafter Community Correctional Facility
On July 16 a 20 year old inmate in a yard of 120 at Shafter CCF tried to climb the 12 foot fence. He got snagged on razor wire, fell, and was secured by guards as the attempted escape was halted.

U S Congressman Cal Dooley applauds President Bush for considering a broad amnesty to grant legal residency to up to three million Mexican immigrants and urges support for a four month extension to permanent residency applications. He voted against the faith based initiative despite backing the agriculture bill.
