Shafter Fire Department volunteers viewed Earl Gunnarson’s sixteen millimeter color film of the Sprouse-Reitz-Justesen fire. They voted to preserve it for training and to purchase the film for $30. Attending were Fire Chief Melvin Parrett Captain Vernon Pierce Albert Finkbeiner Ed Bender Nick Johnson Don Little P V McClure Bill Gunnarson Merlen Janzen Jack Nikkel Lincoln Goddard and Rem Bristow.
One week remains for photographs of the Sprouse Reitz Justesen fire. Captain T L Kinkaid says August 1 is the deadline for prints. Art Craig will judge the contest. Five dollars will be awarded for the best film entry and ten dollars in total prizes.
Eight year old Paul Junior Lovett lost his left eye and suffered a nine stitch gash after placing firecrackers under a tin can in Shafter. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Frank Lovett of Bakersfield and was treated at Kern General Hospital.
The Leslie L. Robinson Post No 213 of the American Legion in Shafter has received notice regarding a matter affecting its veterans organization activities and local post affairs.
Shafter post master George Guenther announced a ten mile extension to the rural mail route. The new section travels toward Bishop Acres Rose and Crome Hitchcock Zachary farms back to Shafter, bringing total route mileage to 73 5 9 miles. He said Shafter is poised to become a first class post office with an extra 5000 dollars in gross business needed.
Kiwanis members at their noon meeting in Canelo Motel watched a Technicolor movie on California farming. The film, produced by Pacific Gas and Electric and presented by Sam Ragan, highlighted San Joaquin Valley wealth with scenes of grapes cotton wheat cattle and potatoes near Shafter. President Hanley Witcher presided.
The Shafter fire department responded Thursday at 3 04 PM to the E H Hoffman residence at Redwood and Acacia to extinguish a trash and lumber blaze that threatened a nearby fence post pile as wind carried sparks. Battalion Chief Art Craig Captain T L Kinkaid Engineer Frank Cornelius and Wimpy Bender led the two engines at scene with no appreciable damage reported.
Mr. John Marsh departed Shafter Tuesday to return to his home in Greenfield Tennessee after a several days visit with his son M. H. Marsh and family.
Mr and Mrs Pete Neufeld have returned to their home after a vacation spent at Pismo.
Bristow of the Shafter Funeral Home announces a new four bed Studebaker ambulance added to the fleet. The 1939 vintage Bender emergency wagon will have full medical equipment oxygen for minor surgeries. Air conditioning and a radio-call set are planned for installation.
Sheldon Anderson announces KCOK Tulare will operate full time on 1270 kilocycles with 1000 watts improving reach across Tulare Kings and nearby counties. The switch makes KCOK the region’s high power network station with three years of construction since the 1946 power increase application. KCOK adds Class A programming and remains affiliated with Mutual Don Lee system.
Voters registration is now open at City Hall with hours 2:00 to 4:00 p m on Tuesdays Wednesdays Thursdays and Fridays. F G Shaw Registrar.
Congressman Thomas H. Werdel tells Shafter Chamber officials that a new Federal building hinges on proving urgent postal needs. Postal Inspectors have surveyed the district while locals press for an early push to secure funds and a larger post office facility in Shafter and Bakersfield.
A teenage dance is set for tonight at the Shafter women’s club house featuring Bill Early and his band. Free punch from V and W Ice Cream Parlor, a free pair of shoes from Wood’s Shoe Store as a door prize, chaperons provided, no smoking or drinking, and admission 50 cents.
Shafter 20 30 club members discussed forming a central clearing house for sub district No 5 to supply speakers information services and films to assist clubs. They named Dave Channeson as new softball team manager replacing Harry Blumpkin and noted Dusty Rhoads plans USC attendance.
H. D. McCoy a 42 year old agricultural worker from North Government Labor camp Shafter suffered a recurring heart attack Monday at 1 10 a m. Captain Vernon Pierce Rem Bristow and County Captain T L Kinkaid responded with the fire department resuscitator squad. The patient recovered in about thirty minutes. He did not lose consciousness only breathing difficulty.
J Reagan of Pacific Gas and Electric Company entertained Shafter Rotary members with a color film Electricity on the Farm at the Cawelo Motel luncheon last Tuesday. Bill Stoller presided as program chairman and introduced Reagan, with rotating chairmanship among members for upcoming weeks. The meeting was short and business was discussed so the film could be shown.
Mrs. Lester Neufeld hosted dinner with her parents Mr and Mrs Carl Neuman from Shafter and Mr Neuman’s brother in law and sister Mr and Mrs Earl Ellis from Medford Oklahoma visiting here.
