Shafter Aims to Keep Gangs Out After Fatal Stabbing
Shafter police bolster enforcement after a June 23 stabbing and shooting left one dead and four injured. Chief Charlie Firecoat vows to deter outside gang members, while police deploy multi tiered prevention and suppression strategies, community involvement, and interagency resources to curb gang influence. The Barrio Westside gang, with 40 to 60 members, is cited as the local source of crime. Delano and McFarland are noted as regional gang flashpoints amid Kern County’s broader violence plan funded at about 20 million dollars.
