Shafter pool project eyed by state parks official
A Parks and Recreation Department official will inspect Shafter to evaluate a 383,561 dollar Land and Water Conservation Fund grant request to renovate the aging pool complex. LRPD estimates total costs at 807,337 dollars while seeking city aid and public support to restore the facility used by nearly 200 children daily and local schools.

City official escapes serious injury in aircraft crash
Shafter City Planning Director Lawrence Tomasello narrowly escaped death when an experimental aircraft he was flying lost part of its propeller and crashed in San Bernardino County. NTSB investigator Richard Childress said Tomasello was lucky to be alive as the aircraft went out of balance and severed its engine mounts. Tomasello, who sustained a broken ankle after skidding into a culvert, will have a metallurgical analysis and a formal report in about two months.
