A total of 34,853 carloads of potatoes were shipped from Kern County this spud season up to July 11, per the Federal State Market News Service. This compares with 31,069 last year. Government shipments reached 3,326 carloads versus 260 a year ago, and 5,766 truckloads delivered by July 2, up from 4,875. Overall, shipments exceed last year by 7,711 with more reports expected.
F R Kalloch of Bakersfield was re-elected president of the Kern County Chamber of Commerce for the fourth year. Emory Gay Hoffman was reappointed general manager. W F Reynolds becomes vice president, succeeding J R Anderson. A L Trowbridge retires as executive secretary. Cecil T Jones named to replace Trowbridge.
Jack Manweiler, director of the North Shafter Farm Labor center, spoke to the Shafter Kiwanis at Canelo Motel about the camp's purpose, duties, and facilities. The camp houses over 1,500 residents with 240 cabins 64 garden homes and 80 acres. governed by a bi weekly Community Council. The center runs a store library church nurse clinic fire department and programs with a small staff. Congress created 21 camps in 1936 37 to relocate migratory workers during dust bowl migrations and they may be sold to grower groups at 15 cents on the dollar for at least 20 years. Visiting Kiwanians included Irving Lane and Alvis Smith.
Mr. Kenneth Howell presided for the regular dinner meeting of the 20 30 club held Wednesday evening at Motel Cawelo. Plans were discussed for the Sub District meeting at Cawelo on August 4. The district includes nine clubs and a large attendance is expected. Chuck Klassen reported progress on rest rooms built by the 20 30 club in Manuel Park. Last year at the 20 30 No Convention in San Antonio members promoted Shafter with their Spud Room. Tentative plans for the National Convention in September at Catalina Island include another display showing Shafter's long whip.
Lloyd Sukut, driver, suffered first degree burns on his back and right arm when his father's three quarter ton truck caught fire about 8 10 a m west of Beach on Burbank. Fire department arriving, one tire and upholstery burned as a gasoline can overturned spilling into the exhaust. Lloyd, not seriously injured, was recovering at last reports.
Mrs. Orita Leach was a visitor in Bakersfield on Wednesday.
Ryland M. Jacobus M D joins Dr. Harold C. Freedman to start medical practice in Shafter. A South Dakota native, he earned a BA in 1935 and BS in medicine in 1938 from the University of South Dakota, an MD from Rush in 1940, and served as a flight surgeon during World War II. He completed internal medicine residency at Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago in June.
Four year old Dorothy Louise Annis remains in fair condition at Kern General Hospital after a train car wreck near Shafter killed five people from two families. Final rites were held in Tulare for the five victims of the 1941 Willys crash with a Santa Fe passenger train at 5 19 p m on Beech Avenue crossing.
Announcement this week that Shafter Recap & Tire Shop will be sold to Joe Neuman from Ralph Lachenmaier who has run the business since 1940. Neuman, a longtime Shafter resident since 1925, will keep most staff and farming interests, with Beulah Neuman assisting and the same crew remaining. Lachenmaier shifts focus to farming in Delano while his brother grows potatoes. The shop, at 269 East Lerdo across Hitchcock's Auto Parts, remains a major outlet for B F Goodrich tires and recapping services serving Northern Kern County.
Mr and Mrs Christopher Senn welcome son Randolph Michael born July 13 at Mercy Hospital weighing 7 pounds 3 ounces. Mrs Senn is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Neufeld. Mr and Mrs Gene Enns announce a baby boy weighing nine pounds five ounces born July 10 at Friese s Maternity Home.
Mr and Mrs Leo Sukut enjoyed a Sunday picnic recently at Mooney's Grove, five miles south of Visalia, with a peaceful outing and family mood.
County Judge E K Grant reports the local justice court posted its largest June ever with total cash fines of 3674.50. Traffic fines 2705, misdemeanors 918, filing fees 51.50. Grant notes a four year rise since 1944 and cites Highway 99 as the main source of traffic cases on a nine mile east Shafter stretch. During the 4th of July weekend 75 traffic tickets were issued on that stretch while only 3 elsewhere. The anniversary of Grant’s four years in office was marked last week.
A blaze at the Ben-H Arkelian ranch three miles east of Shafter destroyed the main barn and its contents including sacks grain and farming equipment. Firefighter units from Shafter Minter Village and McFarland battled the flames for about 15 minutes. A cow was saved. damage ran into thousands. Cause undetermined possibly spontaneous ignition in a manure pile. The fire also threatened two more barns.
City councilman says the sanitation department offers 16 and 32 gallon garbage cans that meet local laws. Cans are sold at regular prices, marked with resident addresses, and can be delivered to homes by calling city hall.
Joe's Topper Bakery will close after tomorrow night for the summer, reopening September 1. Owner Joe MacArthur cites intense heat and a new cooler as reasons, with a six week shutdown ending Aug 31 or Sept 1. The owners plan a July and August trip to St. George Utah, where MacArthur’s brother runs a bakery. An opening date notice will appear in the Press.
Mr and Mrs Neuman have moved the Neuman West Ranch to Neuman Central Ranch. The change renames the property and shifts its operations to the new site with unchanged ownership and management.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Neuman were Sunday night visitors in Bakersfield to celebrate their wedding anniversary.
Mr and Mrs H Forrest Woods of Wood's Shoe Store were business visitors in Los Angeles on Wednesday. They report the temperature was even hot in the coast city.
Spud season in Shafter winds to a close with growers cleaning sheds and locking up. A reefer car shortage and cool weather partly aided harvesting while potato traffic slowed. attention shifts to cotton as Kern County pivots after a drawn out potato season and government plans to use potatoes for relief flour.
Shafter Floor Covering moves to the Klassen building on Central Avenue east of the railroad tracks, from 517 Santa Fe. Owner Adolph Goertzen, a linoleum specialist, adds venetian blinds and window shades to offerings with a front display of various linoleum patterns. New contact phone is 2601.
Stringham's Drug Store in Shafter installs new silver steel awnings this week. The sun deflecting panels keep the interior cooler and provide shade for the storefront.
