The Shafter community organized an annual Potato Festival this spring with a parade barbecue rodeo glider meet aquacode and youth activities. The event drew wide publicity for Shafter and fostered pride and future festival plans. Leaders predict turning on full community energy could yield major local improvements.
Ruth Lott of Shorter among thirty three Kern County artists showing works at the Santa Barbara Museum from July 11 through a county exhibit. The display features junior and adult artists, watercolors, and dry media, loaned works from the Kern County Recreation and Cultural Commission and paintings selected from the Kern County Art Competition.
Robert Thomas Rutledge, 36, buried at Shafter Cemetery after services in Flickinger-Janzen Mortuary. He died in a Terra Bella crash while traveling from a job with two companions. one survived with minor injuries. He lived in Oildale, born in Paragould Arkansas, and leaves Thelma his widow and two young sons.
State Senator Jess Dorsey of Bakersfield said a joint interim committee will meet in Bakersfield on August 1 to address dust and wind erosion in the lower San Joaquin valley. Five assemblymen and five senators will form the panel to study Lost Hills and nearby areas and propose conservation districts.
A. W. Neal of Shafter was told he could lose his 1947 Plymouth bought for 1906.50 after it was revealed to be tied to a state wide stolen car ring linked to G. Max Kindig. Greene Haldeman of Los Angeles obtained a judgment of 1712.91 and a new trial was granted when Neal was not held responsible for the inadvertence.
Two juveniles aged 16 and 19 from Shafter were fined 10 dollars each yesterday in County Judge El Grant's local justice court after being found guilty of stealing two gallons of gas for their car on Tuesday night. The 19-year-old was Arnold Gene Moore. the younger accomplice's name was withheld due to minority.
Fair Board and Kern Chamber officials plan a cooperative push to attract participation from outlying towns for the September Kern County fair. The association will spend 814 dollars on decorations and banners while organizing a Fortyniners ride and a chuckwagon cook event. The board authorized 1000 copies of the official song The County of Kern and plans weekly sing alongs and recordings for broadcast.
Industrial cotton leaders urged the Agriculture Committee to delay marketing quotas until cotton supply reaches 108 percent of normal and urged immediate authorization to apply acreage allotments when below that level. Dr. C R Sayre spoke for the group on reducing government controls while Pace pressed to limit credit for overplanting and protect non cooperators.
Mrs Lele Thomas flew to Inglewood to spend a holiday with her daughter and family Mr and Mrs William Young and children Kay and Philip. She returned by plane.
Shafter High School undergoes major renovations including redecorated classrooms and halls, repainted farm buildings, a new cafeteria, four added classrooms, and two gym additions. New faculty include Joseph Galante biology and consumer education, Elliott Garrison agriculture, Gerald Hedden social science, Majorie Rose English and Spanish, Jeannette Schumacher English and dramatics, Charles Baldwin business training and mathematics, and Robert Owen senior problems and English replacing prior staff.
Neville Knowles of the Coberly West Company cotton department was the main speaker at the Shafter Rotary Club luncheon in Cawelo last Tuesday. The England native discussed world travels and was introduced by Bates Dewey. Dr. George Collins joined as a new Rotary member, welcomed by President Harold Freedman.
County Captain T L Kinkaid reports only three Sprouse Reitz Justesen fire snap shots have been entered as the contest closes August 1. Two weeks remain to submit a bold shot and win a five dollar prize for the Shafter fire. Art Craig will judge the contest. The best movie shot will earn ten dollars.
Dr James Hahn told the Press Marilyn, their daughter, is well but has been moved to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles for further tests. The Shafter girl was injured in the holiday crash that killed two people.
Lauada Veach, 76, died of natural causes in Kern General Hospital. Born in Ferrier County Texas, she lived in Shafter in recent years. Survived by sons Ernest John George Wesley Dave and Miles Leach of Shafter and brothers Clarence Martinez and Willie Leach of Auburn California. About twenty grandchildren. Services by Rev Jans at Shafter Cemetery.
Marvin Lane presided at a weekly dinner gathering of the Shafter 20-30 club at the Cawelo Motel. Marvin Weidenbach spoke on the Potato financial report, and a Reno letter endorsed Digger Carlson for the 2030 International presidency. Members voted to send sympathy visits to Ivan Myers and Greg Malory. George Cooper attended as a special guest.
The California Crop and Livestock Reporting Service says farmers planted about 963000 acres of cotton this year, an 18.9 percent rise and 153000 acres above last year’s high of 810000. The July report notes the record acreage exceeds prior highs and signals strong statewide planting.
Mr and Mrs S M Steward and Mr and Mrs Steeve Lessner of San Pedro stopped overnight in Shafter at the Anderson Court on Monday. They praised the fair community and said they planned to return during the next three months while vacationing in the state.
Kern County reports a June record of 17 971 carloads of potatoes with 35 771 carloads for the season through July 1 led by A Burtch county agricultural commissioner. Warm weather sped harvests and price levels remained satisfactory despite heavy production.
Theodore Bayless expands the Smith Corners grocery in South Shafter with a 14 by 48 foot rear addition. The structure will hold the storeroom and South Shafter post office sub station. Sons Gerald and Jack assist. Mrs Iva Bayless will manage the sub station. Hours are 9 am to 6 pm daily, half day Saturday. Grace Meeks helps in the front store.
Charter memberships in the Death Valley 49ers four county Centennials drive are available through November 1 announced by Supervisor Charles P. Salzar. The drive covers Kern Los Angeles Inyo and San Bernardino counties and follows June campaign success. A huge Death Valley pageant is set for Saturday November 19 with decals and individual cards offered to supporters.
A public roads report shows California would obtain about 1714.2 miles of rural roads costing 522,672 and 186.3 miles of urban roads costing 616,755 under a proposed 11.27 million dollar express highway system. The plan, urged by President Truman, aims to triple current construction and finish the network in 20 years to link major cities, production centers and defense areas.
Cecil T. Jones, Bakersfield civic leader, was named president of the Kern County Chamber of Commerce at the forty second annual meeting. El Tejon notes that Budge Kaiocci declined another nomination as president, with Kalloch remaining as executive director for his district.
James Price of the Arvin National Farm Labor Union denounces importing Mexican labor for the Kern county cotton harvest. Ren H. Hayes of the San Joaquin Valley labor bureau joins in opposition, arguing local residents suffice to manage the crop without outside help.
