The Shafter community mourns J C Channeson known as Joe a modest farmer who fed his land and helped others for 26 years. He advised neighbors supported students and families and welcomed the pool tax as benefiting the youth. Mrs Gribble returns home after Bakersfield hospital stay following major operation.
Shafter Press previews tonight’s 7 30 p m Kiwanis Rotary game on the high school diamond the second in a three game series following a Kiwanis victory. No admission charged due to expected overflow crowd with lineups listed led by Marion Crockett Pat Kelly Al Mortimore Ed Brown Vernon Pierce Joe Cosgrove Clarence Neuman John Revell Harold Greene Ralph Janzen Bill Stoller John Reily Jack Janzen.
Shafter growers unanimously approve a plan to keep the two Federal Farm Labor camps open after September 30. A committee led by Merrill Thomas will liaise with state and federal authorities to head off camp closures, while meetings in Cawelo and Wasco discuss options depending on the Hope bill outcome.
Jack Dial pitched a no hitter for Hitchcock's Auto Parts in a 4 0 win over McClure Drug Store at Richland school diamond. Dial struck out 11 in 7 innings, while Reuben Siemens hit a homer and Carl Taffera two triples for the victors amid a dozen hits. Ralph Lachenmaier had a complete shutout the night before in a separate game.
The body of 16 year old Ralph Richard Hendrix was sent to Shafter for services and burial. Reverend Cecil Pool led the Janzen Chapel service at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial followed at Shafter cemetery. Hendrix was born March 1, 1931, in Okmulgee Oklahoma and had lived in Shafter and Wasco with his parents Mr and Mrs Alva R Hendrix.
A. F. Geib manager of the Dr Morris Mosquito District spoke at the Shafter Chamber of Commerce meeting at Shafter Motel. He described two main mosquito types and said standing water from any source invites breeding. He cited sink drains coolers street gutters catch basins cesspools fish ponds and containers as common sources.
After a two month illness Charles Michael Clements died at Kern General Hospital at 10 42 a m He was the two year old son of Mr and Mrs C J Clements proprietor of Shafter Radio and Appliance Co Graveside services were held at Calvary Cemetery Los Angeles Janzen Funeral Home handled arrangements Michael born September 1 1945 in Los Angeles died July 11 1947 at age 2 years 11 months Relatives include Bill Clements brother J W Frizzell uncle and Bill Frizzell cousin
Three stores in the building owned by J C Ohanneson closed Wednesday during his funeral services from 10 a m to 12 noon. Wood s Shoe Store Shafter Maintenance Paint Store and Kem Furniture Co ceased operations out of respect for the late Mr Ohanneson.
Miss Martha Gloeckler returned home from the hospital Wednesday and is recuperating from a major operation performed June 26.
Week end arrests by city officers include Robert McClure 647 Central for intoxication Daniel Anders Filatoff Shafter for drunken and reckless driving Roy Monarch Shafter for drunken and reckless driving without a license Howard Collins booked for assault with a deadly weapon drunkenness and disturbing the peace Willy Owens suspected of assault with a deadly weapon and drunkenness Andrew Franklin booked for intoxication.
Abe and Red Thompson launch Thompson's Garage behind Anderson's Music Shop on Central Avenue East of Munzer in Shafter. Abe, a former Shafter Car & Home Supply mechanic, served 23 months in the Pacific as a flight engineer with the 5th Air Force before returning to start the business with his brother Red. The site previously housed a body and fender shop run by Otto Williams, the Signal Garage.
Wasco evangelistic meetings run July 8 to July 27 in a big tent at Seventh and Birch Streets. The Pentecostal Church of God led by Ida McAdoo and the Assembly of God with Rev. O C Shields sponsor nightly healing services by Fannie McCall of Oklahoma City.
Three main Shafter streets Lerdo Highway Shafter Highway and Walker Avenue will be resurfaced with heavy equipment leased by the city Lerdo and Shafter Highways receive 3 inch resurfacing while Walker Avenue gets six inch. City plans further street improvements as new equipment arrives and oil sand 2000 tons has been mixed for the work.
A blaze destroyed 200 tons of Lerdo Farms hay on Friday. Estimated loss reaches 4600 dollars. Local county fire department assisted Bakersfield McFarland and Delano departments after a careless smoker started the fire.
