Shafter Public Utility Board plans a bond election to finance a sewage disposal and water supply project. Nay says current system overloaded for 1500, health departments protest, engineers propose enlarging to serve 15000, with two new wells and larger sewer line. Advisory council to advise on financing and future needs.
Bakersfield instructors will headline the Teen Age Dance next Friday evening at the Woman's Club. Dancing lessons run from 8 to 9:30 p.m. followed by dancing from 9:30 to 11:00 p.m. Attendees may learn the latest steps with no extra cost, and a large turnout is anticipated.
Kern County groups led by the Chamber of Commerce plan continued operation of 5 labor camps in Arvin Lamont Wasco and 2 in Shafter totaling 10 in the valley. Minter Field pool opens to Shafter Wasco and Melarland youths from ages eight to eighteen starting Monday July 14 with daily hours 1:00 to 2:45 p.m. Limited to 100 swimmers, two Richland school buses provide transport, and a two-guard lifeguard staff ensures safety.
A moment of silence opened the Rotary Tuesday noon meeting in memory of Joe Ohanneson. Al Ingraham announced chairmen for committees including Cosgrove club service Newell program Pierce attendance and others with Stringham to lead community and Stringham co workers Peters Youth Nay rural youth Janzen boy scouts Peters rural urban work Freedman crippled children Shaw traffic safety and more. The president asked the committee to meet Thursday at Cawelo for outline and discussion of the coming Rotary year. Meetings will move to Cawelo each Tuesday at 12 10 p m.
Mrs H C Hull visits her mother Mrs Helena Love in Grants Pass Oregon. The pilgrimage reflects a family reunion documented in local social pages.
The Shafter police request housing for three married officers with two children each. All three must live outside town, as officials urge local families to provide suitable accommodations and ask offers or leads to call the police department at 323.
Mrs. Robert Stockton and son Stevie depart Thursday for a ten day visit with Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Stockton at their ranch near Greenhorn.
The Kiwanis and Rotary clubs announce the second annual softball clash Tuesday at the high school at 7 30 pm. Admission is free and Sheriff Johnny Loustalot is expected to umpire. prior game result favors Kiwanis though final score disputed.
Roy Farrell, director of the Shafter Summer Recreation Program, spoke at the Kiwanis meeting detailing this year’s expanded activities and the program’s success. The initiative reduces juvenile delinquency, centers on four softball leagues with 27 teams and 400 participants, and draws crowds of 300 nightly. The Arts and Crafts classes at Richland school and strong support from the Shafter 20-30 Club, which pays umpires, highlight community involvement.
One exhibitor in the junior division at the high school hobby show on Tuesday July 22 is 15 year old Willard Stoller of Shafter. He will display a gas model airplane he built two months ago, joining other Shafter youths with various model planes. Entries continue and a strong hobby showing is expected. organizers urge interested exhibitors to contact Ray Kitts at Shafter 4611.
Mr and Mrs Walter Poznoff and their son Glennie have returned from a two week vacation at Santa Monica reflecting on their seaside break and family time together.
Today the Shafter Chamber of Commerce hears A. F. Gieb manager of the Dr. Morris Mosquito Abatement District in response to a chamber request. Shafter joined the district last fall after a chamber led drive to eliminate mosquitoes.
J Charles Ohanneson a Shafter rancher and civic leader died after a long illness in a Bakersfield hospital. He was 57 and had lived in Shafter 26 years after being born January 24 1890 in Fresno. He held membership in American Legion Wasco Lodge Knights Templar and Al Makvah Temple. He survived by wife six brothers two sisters and his mother with private services held at Greenlawn Chapel and burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Ralph Lachenmaier pitched a no hitter for the Shafter Recaps, facing 22 batters and walking only one. The Recaps beat Kern Materials 3 to 0 as Russell drove in two runs and Janzen scored on two occasions. The win improves the season record to 6 and 2, avenging an earlier loss to Kern Materials.
The 20 30 club visited Kern General Hospital on Wednesday night instead of meeting. Hospital staff led the tour and showed club members the facilities and operations throughout the facility.
Next week’s men’s league games start Friday July 11 with Food Town hosting McClure at Rio Bravo. July 14 features N Government Camp against Kelly & Ohanne son, and July 16 has Kelly & Chenneson versus McClure at Rio Bravo. July 17 sees Food Town vs N Government Camp.
