Shafter Council Keeps 90 Cent Property Tax Rate
The Shafter City Council maintained a 90 cent property tax rate at its Monday meeting, aligning with several prior years and supporting a sound financial footing. The budget increases total about $20,581 in spending with new items including a $13,000 street sweeper and a $5,000 radio system, while police and fire pay rise modestly. The year end forecast shows expenses near $287,950 against $286,473.99 last year, with additional funds from gas tax and street improvements and a $32,355 balance to reach about $308,531 if needed. A new $20,000 garbage packer was bought last year, bids were not received for Project No. 36 due to a construction strike, the project will be readvertised August 9. The council also waived a building permit fee for the County Library and addressed parking/alley issues near Hitchcock Co. The council approved California Physician's Service insurance for city employees and discussed parking at the county building. A complaint over business license fees prompted an ordinance amendment.
