Increase in Machine Use Will Relieve Manpower Shortages

California Farm Labor Service estimates a threefold rise in machine harvesting for the 1966 canning tomato crop to reduce hand labor needs. Peak shortages are forecast for the week ending September 17 with about 5,000 man-weeks missing. Machines are expected to pick 60 percent of 3,032,000 tons from 92,000 machine-picked acres, while 59,600 acres will be hand-picked. Additional notes cover prior year comparisons, foreign labor certification possibilities, and competing crops drawing labor.
