The Shafter City Council on Monday faced a roughly $50,000 deficit and chose to raid emergency funds rather than raise taxes. They redirected about $24,000 in specific items plus around $20,000 in year-end excess to cover the gap, while also approving a police patrolman hire and a $249 county payment for the Shafter Recreation District.

Westside development plans eyed by Shafter Chamber
Soil specialist Glen Stoller told the Shafter Chamber of Commerce that large boron deposits and high salt limit west side soil suitability. Only about ten percent may support citrus and delicate crops, with 15 years to reach high production. Water costs could reach 50 per acre foot, vs 3.50 in Friant Kern. Belridge Oil plans ~5000 acres of citrus and possible leasing. Route 43 routing discussion targets Wasco to Shafter with a five year build window. Postal business last year reached $114,578.70, up slightly from the prior year.
