Shafter Fourth of July Celebration Lights Up Sky
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce hosted a large Independence Day festival on Thursday July 3 with 6:00 p.m. gates. Angel Jiminez controlled the sound as the Golden Empire Drum and Bugle Corps from Bakersfield College performed and fireworks lit the night. The event featured bounce houses, games, sports challenges, food, a 50/50 drawing, and donations were welcome to cover the fireworks costs estimated at 10,000 to 15,000 dollars.

Shafter Man Arrested for June 25 Attempted Murder
Shafter Police arrested Eduardo Flores on June 30 after he fired a handgun at a residence and nearby apartments on Marengo Street. A family with two children were inside a nearby unit when a bullet struck a wall near a seven year old. Flores, 33, admitted to the shooting. firearm charges and child cruelty counts were filed and the case remains under investigation.

Body found near Shafter identified
A 37 year old man, Phillip Rocha, was found fatally shot inside a black BMW on Riverside Street near Beech Avenue in Shafter at about 2:23 a.m. Police say Rocha died at the scene. Investigators continue the probe and seek tips at 661-746-8500.

Inspiring Youth Overcomes Trouble Through Grizzly Academy
Nathan Quinones, once at risk of a troubled path, joined the Grizzly Youth Academy in San Luis Obispo. Through a 5 am start, 20 week Residential Phase, and community service, he gained leadership, discipline, and lost 68 pounds. His mother Grace Quinonez and Councilmember Gilbert Alvarado praised his transformation.
