The Shafter Press and Wasco Tribune offices close Friday July 4 for Independence Day and reopen Monday July 7 at 8 am with extended classified deadlines. Shafter High offers yearbooks for sale including prior years, via the Finance Office at 746-4961. A 1959 reunion planning is underway with contact Bill Thompson at 435-2374 or wmthomphotmail. com. Senior outreach volunteers assist with Medi Cal and other services via Melanie Davie Haynes at 758-7332. A monthly food giveaway begins at Shafter Christian Fellowship with 150 families served, third Sunday at 2 pm, 632 James St, call Pastor Justin at 661-496-5259. Vacation Bible School at Shafter Missionary Baptist July 7-11 6 to 8 pm at 202 Golden West Ave with Cross Country Trail Ridin Strong with Jesus for ages K-8. Ya all are welcome.

Richland Board names new principal and honors veteran teacher
At the June 23 meeting the Richland Board recognized Carole Lynne Anderson for 37 years of service and named Shirden Prince as Junior High Principal replacing Jason Hutchinson. Gloria De Hayes-Tapia was announced as Assistant Principal at Golden Oak K-6. The board also reviewed superintendent search input and bargaining requests from CSEA and the Richland Teachers Association.

Wasco Deputy solves four investigations with one arrest
A Kern County deputy from Wasco substation solved four investigations on June 24 with a single arrest. Rumaldo Alanis, 23, was identified as the suspect in a Palm Avenue negligent firearm incident and a brandishing case, found with a stolen revolver, methamphetamine, and felon in possession charges. He was booked into Central Receiving Facility.

Woman sentenced for mail theft conspiracy in California case
Mayra Alejandra Soria of Los Angeles and Bakersfield was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison and 13735 dollars restitution for conspiracy to steal mail and possession of stolen access devices. She was part of Operation Broken Mailbox, indicted with four co defendants in May 2013, and the last to be sentenced. The scheme used homemade devices to fish mail from collection boxes in Wasco and Bakersfield area to steal checks and commit identity theft.

Gas detector stolen from PG&E tied to rural theft case
Kern County Sheriff's Rural Crime Unit detectives contacted Vernon Phillips of Shafter at Beech Avenue and Burbank Street. They found him in possession of a stolen PG&E gas detector worth about 4000 dollars. he was not a PG&E employee and had no permission to possess it. Phillips was arrested for possession of stolen property and booked at the Central Receiving Facility.

Fourth of July Celebration in Shafter at Shafter High
The City of Shafter hosts its annual Fourth of July event on July 3 at Shafter High School starting 6:00 p.m. Activities include bounce houses and games for children, music and food for adults, and a fireworks show at dusk. Admission is free with optional donations for the Chamber of Commerce fundraiser.
