State Engineer recommends forming the Shafter Wasco Irrigation District. Kern county Board of Supervisors to hold final hearing on July 19 at 10 o clock. Board will consider petitions to exclude or include lands, set boundaries, and divide into five director divisions. An election to form the district will be called about 30 days after the hearing.
Shafter Merchants fell 23 to 5 as Bakersfield dominated with steady hits and multiple errors. Local star George Nikkel hit a grand slam in the fourth inning and added a homer in the sixth to pace Bakersfield.
The Shafter Ford agency of Geo. Haberfelde, Inc. celebrates its formal opening Saturday with a public visit to the new buildings. John Kleiner assists manager N. T. Mitchell, Wm. Howell oversees the shop, Roy Russ leads the service department, and John Levi serves as the new car and commercial man.
The last fire call involved 1000 acres of feed at the Ernie Still ranch near Lost Hills burning in a four hour battle. A cigarette tossed from a car on the highway started the fire endangering 500 cattle as Shafter’s fire truck aided the effort.
Winford Cagle suffered head lacerations a wounded back and multiple bruises after his car collided with a truck driven by J C Cradock at the Shafter highway and San Diego Street intersection around 8 80 Monday. The truck owned by F W Handel sustained minor dents. Cradock was uninjured. Investigating officers were Sheriff Roy Dodenhoff and Constable J C Reily. No reason for the crash was given.
California's leading industries will be showcased in a 10 day pageant at the California State Fair in Sacramento from September 8 to 12. Each day will spotlight a different industry or activity including agriculture press churches fruit radio motion picture manufacturing livestock mining and education. Governor's Day moves from Thursday to Friday breaking an 82 year tradition due to Admission Day falling on Thursday. An electrified 40 foot sign with three foot high letters greets entrants and marks the new slogan The fair has gone modern. Secretary Manager Robert Muckler noted counties prepare exhibit booths in the Horticulture hall.
John D. Henderson, Kern County librarian since 1988 and UC graduate, is appointed field representative of the state library system. He will assume the new post August 1 following Mrs. Julia Babcock’s death which led to his prior headship of the county library.
J. C. Ohanneson was elected president of the Richland school district board at the reorganiza tion meeting held Thursday evening. Jake Neufeld became clerk, replacing Ohanneson, as Adolf Kirschenmann steps down after serving as president. Emil Bender was introduced as the new board member.
Announcement of a tentative calendar for the 1937-38 fall and spring terms. The plan, prepared by county and city officials in Bakersfield, sets opening on September 13 with Armistice Day holiday and Thanksgiving weeks. Christmas and Easter breaks are noted with Memorial Day on May 30.
Gustav Weyand Julia Weyand and A J Zimmerman sue Kern County for 51000 claiming defective bridge approaches on Seventh Standard road caused fatal crash at Calloway canal on October 2 1936. Howard Weyand and Rose Zimmerman died when their car left the road and overturned. Civil complaint prepared by Borton Petrini Conron Bakersfield.
Shafter marked a two day Fourth of July with subdued celebration. Occasional cap pistol pops echoed as the town stayed calm and stores closed for the nation’s birthday, offering a quiet observance of history and patriotism.
Kern county girls aged 9 to 18 may register for the Kern YWCA camp at Portuguese Meadows starting July 27. Dr Gaede or A W Eckmann will assist in registration. The first eight day period is for Kern residents. a second period is allocated to Buybank YWCA attendees. Mrs Lola McQuown leads the camp with past Catalina Island experience.
Bob Neuman buys out John Lachenmaier in Lach enmaier Bros and Neuman. The firm will operate as Lachenmaier and Neuman with about 750 acres of land and ranching and produce dealing interests involved. Change to be effected after the spud deal concludes.
Rail shipments of onions from Shafter for the season totalled about 200 carloads, based on incomplete figures. This marks roughly half of last year’s total, though production acres are about half as well.
Albert Koenig a longtime Shafter district rancher died at his Maple grammar school area home after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held Sunday at the German Baptist church in Wasco with Rev. F. E. Klein officiating. Interment was in Shafter cemetery beside his son Orlee. He leaves his widow Katherine, four children Ruth Iva Dell Ida Lavelle and Roy, and numerous siblings in Canada and the eastern states.
The local library reports 20 182 books and magazines circulated from June 1 1936 to June 1 1987. Adults borrowed 2 283 non fiction 6 444 fiction and 751 magazines while juveniles read 8 195 non fiction 7 145 fiction and 364 magazines.
The new telephone directory lists 170 Shafter numbers an increase of 70 from October 1936 when 107 numbers were listed. The update reflects growing local connections and urban expansion in the area this year.
Grain has received the first irrigation and alfalfa the second near Nixon Nevada. The crops are showing good growth and healthy development as water application continues.
The Department of Forestry establishes a new Napa county headquarter on Avenue St Helena. The station will maintain efficient fire fighting gear year round with extra equipment and personnel on duty during the fire season.
James A. Loyd, 84, of Shafter, was struck on Shafter highway near the Pentecostal mission and left severely injured. Deputies and highway patrol pursued reports of a car with a broken right headlight and a male occupant who asked what happened, but no license number was obtained. Loyd was taken to Kern General Hospital with a broken leg and cuts.
Sixty Kern county boys left Tuesday for the first period of the Y M C A summer camp led by Herman Anderson of Shafter. The camp at Portuguese Meadows on Greenhorn mountains runs until July 18 when a second session will begin. Parents and friends are invited to visit the boys on Sunday.
Kern county’s demurrer to attorney Alfred Siemon’s complaint to restrain the county from buying a Delano hospital site was sustained by Superior Judge William Dehy of Inyo county. Siemon sought to halt the purchase. the county’s demurrer was upheld and the board had no budget provision for a Delano hospital, though land was bought last year. Federal aid was offered for the project.
The Rev. Gustav Frey and his family arrive in Shafter to join the First Mennonite Church. Ordained in 1915, he holds A B from Bethany College and A M from Bluffton College. He has preached in Lehi and Goessel and taught religious education in Hillsboro. Two morning services and group Sunday school work have begun.
The Kern County Board of Supervisors pursues a policy to keep the county hospital and its resources available to residents. No further details provided in readable text.
Announcement from Mr and Mrs Jess W Smith that Miss Violette E Smith will marry Mr Clarence Neuman on Sunday July 11. The ceremony will take place in the Shafter area at 8 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the clubhouse.

The Shafter harvest of long white potatoes nears end with 7581 rail carloads shipped, a new all time high. Truck shipments total about 123000 sacks or 412 carloads, suggesting season totals may exceed 8000 carloads and a gross return around 2 million dollars. Prices range from 60 cents to 1.20 per cwt as growers await late crops.
C A Merrill was elected clerk of the board of trustees for a third term at Rio Bravo grammar school. Present board members include C A Merrill F J Schierlmann and others.
Viola Hehn wed in a study ceremony conducted by Rev. Alfred Funck at the Reformed church. The bride, from Menno South Dakota, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Hehn who recently moved to Shafter with relatives. The groom, longtime Shafter resident, has worked with Adolf Kirschenmann in farming and now serves as foreman on the ranch where the couple will reside after their honeymoon.
