California adopts Administrative Per Se DUI license suspensions
California begins July 1 enforcement of Administrative Per Se laws. Officers may seize licenses on the spot for BAC of .10 or higher, or for breath urine or blood test refusals. Licenses may be suspended for 45 days pending DMV review, with appeal possible. The measure, backed by Senator Bill Lockyer, aims to reduce DUI crashes following similar laws in 27 states.

Police seize drugs and weapons in joint Shafter Taft raid
Officers from Shafter Police Department and Taft Police Department served a search warrant at 18424 Scaroni Avenue on June 30 as part of a joint drug investigation. About nine grams of suspected methamphetamine and multiple handguns and rifles were seized. Warrant arrests are sought for Gerald Dale Pharis, 53, and Helen Faye Pharis, 35, both of Shafter. Investigation continues.

Two Vehicle Crashes At Lerdo and Beech Injure Three
At Lerdo Highway and Beech Avenue two-vehicle crash Saturday injured three people. Curtis Furr Kay Furr and Donald Allen transported to San Joaquin Hospital with head injuries and critical condition. Irene Lee 80 of Shafter died June 24 after an extended illness. Memorial services June 27 at Peters Funeral Chapel were officiated by Rev. Joe Pursch and Rev. Rogert Trautman. Born in Minot North Dakota she married Charles Wesley Lee in Seattle in 1935. They moved to Shafter in 1975. Survived by three daughters Elaine Muller Louise Wilson and Suzanne Orr, one sister Ruth Graham, 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Donations to Hospice.
