Hampton directs Lil Abner at Shafter High School
Jerry Hampton, director of this year’s community musical Lil Abner at Shafter High School, leads a 40 member cast with rehearsals on Monday Tuesday and Thursday evenings. He and his wife Reta chair the Fine Arts Committee and seek a few more men for walk on parts. Tickets go on sale in early February and performances run March 7 8 and 9. The production blends local talent with Hampton’s long theater involvement since high school days in Modesto. Hampton recalls Modesto Junior College classmate George Lucas and notes Lucas film American Graffiti drew on their class of 1962. He urges community members to attend for an evening of fun.

Hughes named as performing arts consultant for Kern County
Ed Hughes was named visual and performing arts consultant for the Kern County Office of the Superintendent of Schools. He will coordinate countywide student musical performances and art displays while strengthening music drama art and dance instruction. Hughes has long LAUSD service including 17 years and directed the All-District Marching Band for 13 years. He holds three degrees from Cal State Los Angeles and plans to emphasize elementary programs to build foundational skills.

Cooking for the heart Culinary Heart Kitchen course begins
A six week heart healthy cooking course starts at 7 pm on Tuesday at Bakersfield College Family and Consumer Education building room 12. Dietitians and nutritionists from Mercy Hospital and other local health institutions will conduct lectures and demonstrations.
