Papa Wilhite celebrates 95th birthday in Shafter

Wil Papa Wilhite of Shafter marked his 95th birthday on Sunday at the home of John and Marsha Guinn. Born January 27, 1890 in Honey Grove Texas, he and Martha Ann had eleven children and built a large family with 23 grandchildren 45 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren. Attendees included five of his children and several other relatives while Junior Wilhite honored his father with a joint birthday note.

Three SHS students join Kern County honor band

Ed Hughes reports that three Shafter High School musicians are among 60 Kern County high school students chosen for the 1985 High Schools' Honor Band. Jennifer Dobbs alto sax Tony Hutchinson tuba and Rob Hutchinson trombone comprise the SHS trio. The group will perform Saturday at Bakersfield's Harvey Auditorium at 7 P.M. under conductor Gary Pratt with a program including works by Grainger Berlioz Brahms Sousa.

Nutrition seminar begins February at Shafter Veterans Hall

A six week program led by Brenda Mulder registered dietitian starts February 7 at the Shafter Veterans Hall 309 California Avenue. The course covers whole grains protein fats and beverages with vegetarian meals and demonstrations each Thursday at 7 pm through March 14. The $8 per person $10 per family fee includes materials and a vegetarian dinner buffet final night. For details call 746-4246.
