Maurer and L. E. Plymale. Preparations rush to ready sites and tracks for the onion crop due in six weeks.

Kay Hearing Postponed In Wasco Narcotics Case
The hearing for Dr. Melvin M. Kay of Shafter on five misdemeanor narcotics counts was postponed to February 7. He has been jailed at home since January 23 as prosecutors seek to present additional witnesses. Police say Kay supplied narcotics to three parties and failed to register and record narcotics pensed and prescriptions.

Fresno murderer and potato worker tried to pass bad check
Elton Stone, identified as a confessed murderer of Mary Stammer, was indicted for first degree murder by the Fresno County grand jury. He had worked in Shafter last summer during potato harvest and allegedly raised an $8 finishing check to $48 to attempt cashing it at a local store. The merchant recalls Stone, who left the check to be cashed later and did not return after the deception was discovered.

Pasadenans return home after visiting Shafter Harris home then plan a brief southern trip. They will attend races at Arcadia before resuming daily duties.
Shafter Highlighted in The Earth January Issue
Kern county and Shafter receive the main space in the January Earth issue published by the Santa Fe Railroad. A full page shows a 200 acre mile long potato field north of Shafter owned by Lachenmaier Bros. and Neuman. On May 16 1934 with five power diggers and 148 men 30 carloads of potatoes were dug with 38 shipped that day and night via the railroad.

Freak Rainfall Boosts Pastures and Gardens
A southward freak rain on Tuesday afternoon and night provided notable benefit to grazing lands, orchards, shrubs, flowers, and lawns, despite less than a tenth of an inch of precipitation. Current rainfall stands about four inches below last year at this time.
Huge Increase in Union Acreage for This Year
Kern county farm advisor M A Lindsay reports a 58 percent rise in union acreage for 1936, with the national average set against a long-term 1930-1984 benchmark. He cites a 27 percent higher crop than last year, most growth in Texas by 6000 acres and substantial increases in California especially Shafter. Kern county also expanding planting.
