Foreign diplomats tour Kern County farms and irrigation sites
Thirty five diplomats from Washington and the United Nations visited Kern County last weekend to study local agriculture. At Shafter and Buttonwillow they stayed with local families and were shown irrigation systems, a zinc spreading plane, carrot processing, and potato growing operations. Molapo of Lesotho toured with Shafter-Wasco officials while Rayne of Norway and Munir of Iraq also visited local farms before continuing their trip.

Paul Hoffmann longtime Shafter Bank of America manager has been promoted to lead the Hunter Square Branch in Stockton. New Section of I 5 to Open February Fourth
State and county dignitaries will attend a ribbon cutting at Buttonwillow Interchange marking the opening of a 24 mile section of Interstate 5 from Taft Highway to Lerdo Highway. The event at 2 p.m. February 4 includes plans by the Buttonwillow Chamber of Commerce and Shafter participation.

Precinct Realignment for Shafter April Election
Shafter voters will cast ballots in two consolidated precincts on April 14. Precinct 1 voters go to City Hall, Precinct 2 voters to the First Baptist Church social hall, with hours 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Council vacancies include Mayor Atkinson not seeking re election and G H Grundy running for a new four year term. Banks and Grundy announce bids while Clerk and Treasurer posts are under consideration.

Hair Spray Attack Nips Theft Attempt
Two juvenile boys attempted to burglarize the home of A W Eckmann in Shafter California. Mrs Eckmann sprayed hair spray on the fleeing youths who were later arrested by Wasco sheriff's sub station officers. They were booked for appearance in a juvenile hall to face charges of attempted burglary.
