Kern County library gains 300 paperback titles at Shafter branch boosting weekly circulation. Harlem Globetrotters visit Bakersfield with Ginny Tiu troupe interlude and family performances praised for artistry. Community meetings discuss Richland Elementary School operations and ongoing tutoring programs.
Leonard, assistant manager of the Han ford Branch, Bank of America, is appointed manager of the Shafter branch. He succeeds Paul Hoffmann, longtime Shafter manager promoted to B of A vice president and manager of the Hunter Square branch in Stockton. Hoffmann's 40 years of service were celebrated at a recent party. Leonard is to arrive in Shafter soon and spend a few days with Hoffmann before transitioning later this month.
Supt Cooke led a detailed look at district operations saying the current budget stands at 1 235 586 dollars with about 95 000 dollars from federal funds. He noted 41 of 70 certificated staff pursued further education and that taxes would likely remain stable regardless of a school unification vote.
Nearly 300 upper grade students and the Buttonwillow school band will attend the ribbon cutting for the new Interstate 5 segment at the Buttonwillow Interchange 14 miles northwest of Shafter on Route 58. County Supervisor Vance Webb and state highway officials will speak as civic leaders from Shafter Taft and Bakersfield join the ceremony.
Shafter police chief Hanley Witcher is recovering well after lung surgery at Memorial Hospital Bakersfield last Friday. He is expected to be discharged later this week and return home, according to Mrs. Witcher. He is in room 157.
Shafter voters see three new entrants for the April 14 municipal race. Among them is Mrs. Alex V. Poznoff joining two incumbents seeking re election to council and city posts. Banks Grundy and Ware round out an expanded slate as officials set canvass and oath dates.
Three announced candidates for the upcoming city election are profiled. W H Johnston longtime city clerk since 1954 resident of Atlantic Avenue active in Chamber of Commerce Kiwanis and Elks he and his family home at 227 Atlantic Avenue. Mettler head Kern County Fair Board elected 1970 president with Wayne Hall as vice president a Shafter area farmer and partner in Em H Mettler & Sons active in livestock agriculture and horticulture since 1919. Mrs Poznoff longtime nurse and PTA welfare worker residing 445 Cross Street with husband farmer Alex Poznoff two sons Allan and Dale. Bert Ware city treasurer returns to post family home 233 Atlantic Avenue sons Tom and Frank with UCLA and teaching positions. San Francisco State note mentions State Compensation Insurance Fund initiative.
