Water District Directors Fight Unopposed in Shafter Wasco Races

All three districts have only one candidate each for the Shafter Wasco Irrigation District Directors election next Wednesday. Incumbents Clarence R. Annin district 1 Edward J. Peters district 4 and Rolf A. Jacobsen district 5 face no opposition. Allan Johnston will again seek the post of District Collector Assessor Treasurer in all five districts with no challengers. Polls run 12 noon to 6 pm.

Shafter Community Chest Drive Falls Short of Goal

The fifth annual Shafter drive raised 66 percent of its $4,825 goal, totaling $3,329.61. Agencies to receive 66 percent include Kern County Boy Scouts and YMCA, Camp Fire Girls, recreation and welfare funds, with pro-rating if late donations arrive.

Shafter Boy 19 Suffocates in Cotton Seed Bin

Robert Wishon a 19 year old resident of Shafter died yesterday afternoon after falling into a cotton seed bin at the L A Camp Cotton Seed Oil Mill in Cawelo. Tiny seeds lodged in his throat causing asphyxia though rescuers and medical staff attempted to revive him. The coroner's case details were not yet released.

Bank of America to Expand Branch by 1500 Feet

P. C. Clarkin, manager, announced remodeling plans for the Bank of America here. The project will add about 1500 square feet of floor space and modernize the branch with a new lighting system acoustical ceilings and new flooring. Working plans will be completed in about a month with construction starting soon after.

Last Rites Here Tomorrow For Christina Mettler

Final services for Christina Mettler will be held at 10 30 a m in Ebenezer Reformed Church Shafter with Rev R Klaudt officiating. She died Monday at age 70 in Riverside California. Arrangements by Flickinger Janzen Mortuary. She leaves multiple relatives including son Albert Mettler and daughters Martha Martha and Andrina Edelmah.

Escaped Merced inmate captured in Shafter gunpoint standoff

William E Farrar 24, an armed escapee from Merced County Jail, was captured early Wednesday in Shafter after resisting arrest and firing a gun at officers shielding himself with his sister at her North Shafter Farm Labor Camp home. Police from multiple agencies surrounding the cabin arrested him.

Shafter 20 30 Club Backs Potato Festival Plan

At a Wednesday meeting in Cawelo the Shafter 20 30 Club discussed the annual Potato Festival. President Ed DeMello led a 34 member gathering and the club endorsed the festival with a proposed harvest dance. No final decision was made pending further study. Shafter leaders push Kern County campaign toward a $30 000 goal with events planned after January 31. Cub Scouts collected 86 65 dollars, 82 donation receptacles remain in Shafter area, and funds can be deposited at Shafter Bank of America or given in stores and theatres during performances.
