Cotton Research Station at Shafter Boosts Valley Quality Over 43 Years
The Cotton Research Station at Shafter, tied to Kern County, has spent 43 years breeding better cotton from global seed sources. Director John Turner notes it can take 12 to 15 years to introduce a new trait, with Acala 442 predominating in the Valley. Yields rose from 503 pounds per acre in 1942 to 1,070 today, and Valley cotton earns premiums of 5 to 15 dollars per bale, aided by a cooperative effort among growers, the U S Department of Agriculture, the University of California, and Kern County.

Installations begin in major offices within about a year, with effects felt across communities as mail moves faster between cities and small towns. The seeing eye device will follow next year but ZIP Code remains essential in current processing.
