Threat to Cut Water at Richland School Overdue Bill

Bruce Crawford reported to the board that Shafter Public Utility District warned water would be shut off if a $151.28 bill was not paid by February 1. The issue stemmed from a fire and office moves, and the board decided the bill should be paid.

Busy First Month For Judge Harvey Gaede In Shafter

Judge Harvey Gaede reports a busy start with 250 traffic citations from local police and CHP on Highway 99 from Kimberlina to 7th Standard Road. He dismissed petty theft cases to pursue burglary charges and ordered three speeding youths to traffic school in Bakersfield for six weeks. Water deliveries begin early to make room for runoff

Manager Robert Diltz of the Shafter-Wasco district reports that water deliveries started Wednesday for users in the district area. Water is released early from Millerton Lake to make room for spring runoff, one of the earliest delivery dates on record.

Fire Call Mixup Delays Shafter and Kern Responders

Shafter Volunteer Firemen and Kern County Fire Department battled a late Saturday blaze in the 500 block on East Orange Avenue. Responders found the fire later at 168 East Ash, while county trucks checked Smiths Corner for a second Orange Avenue site. A county truck backed into Mel Parrett’s Volkswagen during the search. The vacant Frank Ybarra house suffered a $15 mattress loss. Both departments urge callers to provide exact street and number details.

Veterans To Retire From Richland School Board

Two long serving trustees Clarence Neuman and Harold Miller will not seek re election to the Richland school board leaving two seats open. Incumbent Jay Atkinson plans to run amid past defeat in 1962 and a recent appointment to finish Leonard Gaede's term. Nominations close March 5 at the County Superintendent of Schools office in Bakersfield.

Richland School Board Rehires Supt Crawford on Two Year Deal

The Richland School Board renewed Bruce Crawford’s contract for two years, keeping the annual figure at $15,750 after rejecting a higher four year request. The board also awarded Ted Mull a $24,443 repair contract for the burned administrative building, while audits showed a lower cost per average daily attendance and a $102,000 carryover from the prior year.

Merchants Set Dates For Sales In Shafter
