PIK Program explained to Kern County growers and businessmen

A Kern County meeting at South Bakersfield Veterans Hall outlined the Payment-In-Kind program with speakers Fred Starrh Dick Bressler and Gene Lundquist detailing 1983 planting choices. They described options from 20 percent reductions to 50 percent base cotton divestments and 80 percent compensation on idle acres, plus bid procedures penalties and protections for tenants.

Shafter Historical Society Seeks Donations for Depot Project

The Shafter Historical Society aims to finish the Depot area with curb and gutter work, sidewalk installation, and a five year cost or services plan with the City of Shafter. Memorial funds may acquire artifacts, a memorial plaque will be placed, and fundraising includes caboose trucks and a $4000 1912 tool car for display. Optional field trips, a late March pot luck dinner, and a May Festival barbecue are planned along with a postcard contest to promote Shafter and Kern County.

The Kern High School District invites internal applicants for the Shafter High School principal position through January 28 1983 with interviews set for early February. Jerry Long serves as acting principal until a successor is appointed, with a possible board appointment on February 7.

Public Works Director Lewis Carroll Retires Honored in Shafter

Public Works Director Lewis E. Carroll retires January 31 1983 after nineteen years with the City of Shafter. He is to receive a retirement dinner this Friday and will serve temporarily in a part time capacity to brief the incoming Public Works Director John Guinn on prior projects. City Administrator Caires notes planned attendance by Pacific Telephone at February 14 council meeting to hear service complaints. Governor Deukmejian's budget calls for a 23824 reduction for Shafter in 1982 83, bringing total subvention cuts to over 47000 this year. The council supports Stan Wilson's request to preserve Amtrak Valley train service, voting to send a letter of support. The council adopted Lifeflight helicopter transportation and approved annexation of Sewer Farm No 2 with a February 25 public hearing. A feasibility study on airport strip annexation proceeds with Wise and Little to assist. The Shafter Historical Society seeks five year funding terms for depot curb and sidewalk work. The Chamber will present a program on the Shafter Conservation Council at Friday noon in JD's, aiming to boost city wide conservation efforts.

Mock Trial round one pits Shafter against Wasco at courthouse

Shafter High School faced Wasco High School in a mock trial at the Shafter courthouse with defense and prosecution teams. The case People V. Stevens charged Assault with a Deadly Weapon against Jerry Keeley. Judges praised preparation, but verdict found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt while Shafter won the round 41 to 38.
