Three teens in Rosedale linked to high speed chase and shooting

Shafter High School students and two juveniles from Rosedale were arrested after a 30 minute pursuit that began when a 16 year old was shot in the head with a gun during a car theft attempt. Bradley Hayden, 16, was wounded and drivers and officers chased the Camaro at speeds over 130 mph before it crashed and officers apprehended suspects. A .25 caliber pistol was found in the car and one suspect was treated at Kern Medical Center with shotgun pellets.

City Council approves Ash Street plan and purchases

City Council accepted the Ash Street proposal to extend the street from Nickel Street to Shafter Avenue and pursue a full-width design with curb and gutter funded by adjacent property owners where possible. They also approved fire equipment bids totaling 4634.85 and a street sweeper engine upgrade, plus a festival committee permit and police unit repair estimates.

Shafter man pleads to vehicular manslaughter in hit and run

A 22 year old Shafter man pled guilty to a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge in the December 10 hit and run death of 70 year old Jesus Romo Plaza. Sergio Prieto Acosta admitted driving the vehicle and will be sentenced February 8 to up to one year in county jail after a felony hit and run charge was dismissed.

Moon earns Silver Beaver for service to Scouting in Kern County

Richard Moon of Shafter received the Boy Scouts Silver Beaver at the Southern Sierra Council 57th Recognition Dinner in Bakersfield. Cathy Prout presented the award. Evron Barber read the certificate. Moon, a longtime Scout leader and educator, later became Belridge School District superintendent.

Shafter Planning Commission Hears Church Annexation Case

The Shafter Planning Commission met January 16 to review the environmental determination for a conditional use permit for the Shafter Freewill Baptist Church as it seeks City annexation. The plan includes a sanctuary, classrooms, and a playground on property north of Sierra Avenue extension, south of Redwood Drive, west of Willow Street extension, and east of the City Corporation Yard. The panel endorsed a mitigation plan with Redwood Drive as primary access, a temporary western access for emergencies, ground cover to curb dust, and future Willow Street development. The annexation request 784 Schuetz also sought zoning of 20 acres as R-1 and 40 acres as agricultural.

Delano Center Offers 13 Bakersfield College Courses in Shafter

College classes begin January 29 1979 at the Delano Center in Shafter with 13 courses taught in the Shafter High School social studies building. Most classes are three units with no tuition or prereqs beyond age 18, plus free advising financial aid and veterans information.
