Starrh family wins Farm Press High Cotton honor
Fred Starrh and Starrh Cotton Growers of Shafter receive the Farm Press Cotton Foundation High Cotton Award for decades of leadership in California agriculture. The family operates 12,000 acres including 6,000 acres cotton, 2,100 alfalfa, 280 pistachios, 1,600 almonds and 30 carrots.

Local pastor Gene Freeman of People's Church dies
Rev Herschell Gene Freeman died January 13 2004 in Shafter after 38 years of ministry. He led People’s Church for 20 years in the old James Street theater and evangelized 18 years with wife Bette. Born 1930 in Bower Oklahoma he leaves four sons 14 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Donations support Winn Freeman’s ministry.

Shafter Health and Chamber January Notices
The Shafter Healthy Start program invites residents to the January Shafter Collaborative meeting on January 21 from 4 to 5 p.m. at Redwood Elementary. Shriners Hospitals representatives will discuss free orthopedic and burn reconstructive surgery and the group will host flu shots. The Kern County Health Department offers flu vaccines and clinic dates January 22 at 329 Central Valley Highway. Child Health and Pregnancy Screening appointments are available January 22 and 26 with specific times. The Shafter Chamber of Commerce will host its annual officers installation and awards banquet January 29 at 6 p.m. at the Shafter Veterans Hall with tickets from Fabrics, city hall, or the chamber office.

Retirement ceremony honors Feil and family in California
Feil family traveled to Travis Air Force Base on January 9 for a retirement ceremony honoring Tech nical Sergeant Ryan B. Feil as he concludes 20 years in the Air Force. Ryan served in multiple bases including Yokota Norton Andrews Ramstein and Ramstein. He earned a Meritorious Service Medal and holds degrees in applied science general counseling and a son named Brandon. He plans to remain in Northern California as a civilian counselor at Travis AFB.
