Elk roof ing plant near Lerdo Highway eyes on line next month
Ten years ago the Elk roofing facility at Lerdo Highway and Highway 99 faced delays but Gus Freshwater of the local operation says the plant should be online next month with about 80 employees already hired and five more expected before February end. Payroll is around 2.5 million while heavy rains slowed construction and testing of the rail spur was completed Friday. Elcor notes the Shafter plant is positioned to meet anticipated demand from California’s record rainfall. Five years ago Sonic Drive-In picked Shafter as its first Kern County site outside Bakersfield, signaling strong commercial potential for the city.
