Shafter Chamber History Highlights Early Growth and Leaders
Ben G Grundy recalls the Shafter Merchants and Businessmen Association founding in 1931 later renamed the Shafter Chamber of Commerce in 1946. Paul Newall served as president for 1946 47, the group backed city improvements from the Central Valley Highway strip to Five Points, and helped develop Manuel Park water and sewer systems. Early meeting places included Lee's Drive In, later housed in the Historical Society Museum building. The chamber funded depot renovations and gained museum space, but records are sparse due to non permanent sites. Membership has grown from under 50 to nearly double today.
