Paul Harvey airs a critique of risk assessment and regulatory science. He notes millions of women with silicone implants and argues the FDA overstates risks, citing laboratory animal tests as the basis for warnings. He warns that risk management blends science with politics and that warnings can be exaggerated.
Paul Har writes that government experts face a bias toward public benefit, but cost estimates for questionable benefits reach 175 billion dollars annually. Extreme assumptions at every exposure assessment stage can inflate risk by multiples, potentially misrepresenting danger and fueling sensational headlines.
The writer voices a bleak mood two weeks into the year as tensions in the Persian Gulf and Lithuania weigh on thoughts of war. The piece argues for broad citizen involvement in funding and supporting schools as demographics shift toward an older population and more minority and poor students. It emphasizes shared responsibility across ages and classes to sustain education and democratic vitality, quoting James Madison on knowledge and governance.
