Shafter invites residents to a town meeting to discuss a large upcoming celebration described as the biggest and most memo event in the town's history. Organizers tout community cooperation and expected participation.
The City Council voted unanimously to drop California Physicians Service and switch employee coverage to Bankers Life Insurance Company of Nebraska. Time cards will begin February 1 for all city workers, following audit recommendations. A separate contract with the Chamber of Commerce funds the 50th anniversary celebration with a $1000 payout based on receipts.

Six weeks old Billy R. Ely Jr. died in a fire at 18852 Beech Street. Mrs. Ely, away at her mother’s home, could not reach the infant as flames spread rapidly through the wood frame dwelling. A girl reported hearing the alarm as neighbors and investigators began inquiries.
At the Richland Board of Trustees meeting on Monday January 14 Superintendent Bruce M Crawford announced a Northwest Area Committee on School District Reorganization will meet January 29 at Shafter High School The meeting stems from a Kern County discussion of unifying the northwest area extending from Rio Bravo and Buttonwillow to the county line Wasco and nearby districts
Adventists invite the public to a 7 30 p m program at the Seventh day Adventist Church at west Lerdo highway and Poplar Reverend Fagal director of the Faith For Today program will speak. The on air quartet from the show will accompany him Pastor Aaron Wagner notes the series is the oldest such program in the United States and is viewed on more than stations here and in six countries outside the United States and on the Armed Forces Television Network.
It was revealed today that Lynn Wiedmann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mert Wiedmann of Shafter, is a candidate in the Sth annual Cotton Princess competition.
