Buttonwillow Recreation and Park District invites the community to join PiYo sessions Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 7 PM at 556 Mile Ave. The program targets ages 16 and up and runs at the Park District Multi Purpose Facility. Shafter senior outreach program offers free Medi Cal Medicare help and home visits through Melanie Davie Haynes at 758 7332. Shafter Christian Fellowship partners with Community Action Partnership of Kern to feed 150 families monthly at 632 James St on the third Sunday at 2:00 PM. Pastor Justin at 661 496 5259. Senior Center activities for ages 55 plus at 505 Sunset Ave Monday to Friday 10 30 AM to 2 PM include exercise crafts computer classes reading singing and games. Delano reopens the Community Correctional Facility after months of effort. Assemblyman Rudy Salas and Delano officials hailed 89 new direct jobs and 25 ancillary positions created by the CDCR contract. The facility can house 578 inmates with Level 2 and 3 inmates. In a separate crash near Wasco, a 32 year old Brazilian tourist died when a GMC Yukon XL failed to stop at Palm Avenue.
Deputies dispatched to Lerdo for disturbance at the Sheriff’s Office Lerdo Male Minimum Facility around 7:00 p.m. on Sunday January 5 separated responsible inmates as Metropolitan Division deputies provided support. Several inmates sustained minor injuries and were transported to local hospitals. No deputies were injured. Investigation ongoing.
The Charter Committee of Wasco hosts the third town hall on January 16 at 6:00 p.m. at the Wasco Veterans Hall to explain charter city basics, differences from General Law, and the prevailing wage issue ahead of November elections. The public can view the proposed charter at the city website.
A Bakersfield group from Chateau d Bakersfield toured the Local Museum and viewed vintage aircraft and historic artifacts. The museum hosts Winter Formal for Frontier High School later this month with a World War II theme and plans for Founders Day next month.
Chevron U S A Inc and DonorsChoose.org report 2013 Fuel Your School funding in Kern County supported over 308 public school classroom projects, including more than 230 STEM resources and benefiting over 25,000 students. The program aligns Chevron’s education drive to expand STEM access and classroom resources through partnerships with educators and communities. Artit Krichphiphat of Chevron notes the classroom spark when students receive new gadgets, as the initiative addresses underfunding in public schools.
