The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture will host its 46th annual Installation and Awards Banquet on Thursday January 23 at the Veterans Hall beginning at 6 p.m. Floyd Burcham will be guest speaker and The Spindles perform. Tickets are $15 from any chamber member.

Cleanup of Rio Bravo site to begin after plan approval
After almost seven years state health officials say the Rio Bravo Disposal Facility near Shafter will be cleaned of contaminated materials. Eighteen companies that shipped waste to the site have agreed to a plan to remove contaminated sludge hazardous materials and liquids from tanks and sumps at an estimated cost of about five million dollars. Cleanup will start once the final plan is approved this month. The facility operated under DHS and EPA oversight, draining non hazardous wastes brines and later hazardous wastes including solvents pesticide rinse water and corrosives in prior years.
