SWID prepares for first full season buys and hires
The Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District budgets over 10000 for trucks and radios as it readies full operation of a 10 million dollar water system next month. Secretary-manager Robert Diltz says five dispatchers and water tenders are hired, bids opened for a metal shop, and 520 farmers will use water from the Friant Kern canal.

Shafter Generals Narrowly Miss Upset in Practice
The Shafter High School Generals nearly toppled Bakersfield College Freshmen in a Saturday practice game. A frozen ball in the last minute doomed Shafter to a 53 to 50 defeat as Arthur White led with 14 points and Jacobs topped Bakersfield with 17.
Mary events set for 1958 polio drive
The 1958 March of Dimes drive in Shafter announced four definite events. Lions vs 20 30 Club basketball, adult recreation league game, Bowl for Polio night, and Mother's March with local clubs and sorority sponsors. Coffee hours and a $1500 goal were indicated, with Art Stepp and William Irvin assisting.

Community leaders and farmers will hear Earl Coke of Bank of America speak on California agriculture and its link to the national economy January 27 at the Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture installation dinner. Shafter Knife Wielder Arrested After New Year Stabbing
An 18 year old North Shafter laborer Paul Jackson was captured by Arkansas authorities after a New Year Eve tavern stabbing left four injured. He was shot in the heel while escaping jail and is recovering. Victims included two hospitalized with stomach wounds.

Final Rites Held For Mrs Isaac Pioneer Resident
Funeral services for Nettie Baerg Isaac of 30562 Orange Avenue were conducted at the Seventh Day Adventist church with Elder Harvey Retzer presiding. Born in Russia on July 31 1886 she moved to the United States as a child and later lived in Wasco before settling in Shafter. Interment followed at Shafter cemetery with the Robert L. Jones Funeral Home Wasco in charge. survivors include husband Peter S Isaac a son Elmer a daughter Emma Tillman two brothers George Baerg Dinuba and Jacob Baerg Shafter and six grandchildren.
