Shafter Woman's Club raises 95 for Kern District project
At the Veteran’s Hall last Wednesday the Shafter Woman's Club held a games party and silent auction netting 95 for a Kern District Home Society project aiding group living for disabled individuals. The club furnished a Shelter for Battered Women and Alliance on Family Violence room and announced upcoming events including a January 26 board meeting, February 14 fashion show, and February 19 Kern District meeting.

The American Legion National High School Oratorical Contest arrives at Veterans Memorial Building Monday at 7:00 p.m. Grady Bartlett chairs the event to deepen knowledge of the U S Constitution and foster leadership and public speaking in students. Winners advance to Bakersfield on Feb 8 for district competition. top prizes total 16 000, 10 000, 6 000 and 4 000 with many other awards. Guests may arrive early. Auxiliary serves refreshments after.

Santa Claus visited the Lions Club Christmas party at the Shafter Motel. After dinner he handed out candy canes and gifts to each child, with presents placed under a decorated tree. Photos captured excited youngsters as Luciel Walker, co chair, noted the lively scene. Mrs. Walker and Marilyn Gladden decorated the tables with red candles and green foliage sprays.

Dairy Princess sought for District 9 contest
Applications are now being accepted for the District Nine Dairy Princess title. Four Kern Kings and Tulare County entrants will compete for a 12 contestant total. The local winner serves a year promoting dairymen, then heads to Anaheim in June for the California Dairy Princess crown.
