Shafter January events include banquet and charity drive

The Shafter Assembly of God Church hosts a low income commodity giveaway Friday January 22 from 8 to 11 am at 150 Elm. The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture holds its 47th Annual Installation and Awards Banquet at Veterans Hall on January 21 with a Hawaiian Luau theme. Social hour at 6 pm, dinner at 7 pm. Tickets are 417.50 per person, RSVP by January 18 at 746-2600.

Cemetery History talk at AARP meeting

Church offers free low impact aerobics for ladies

The First Southern Baptist Church at 250 Kern Street offers free low impact aerobics for ladies on Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the church facility.

RLSD board moves toward K-6 restructuring plan

Richland leaders paved the way for a district wide shift to K-6 in several schools with a decision possible next month. Superintendent Dan Knapp cited savings while critics questioned costs and sports equipment. Assistant Superintendent Lyle Mack noted furniture is ready and Lerdo School still uses bottled water as trustees had earlier approved exploring the proposal.

Pigeon problem at downtown area sparks council talk

Councilman Don Zachary raised concerns on November 3 about pigeons in the downtown area. The birds leave feathers and droppings, clog roofs and drains, including at Randy Brinsfield's service station, where drain stoppages require cleaning.

Detectives stymied in Kern County Taylor homicide

As year begins, detectives remain at a standstill two months after market manager Clifford Roy Taylor, 42, was gunned down near Wasco on Oct 30 1992. Investigators acknowledge possible acquaintance with Taylor and lack decisive evidence. Officials urge tips to 861-7500, promising confidentiality.

Shafter Studies Public Transit Use With City Survey

More than 200 Shafter residents will be randomly telephoned over weeks as an independent firm surveys opinions on Dial A Ride service Shafter Transit and the inter city bus to Bakersfield Wasco and Shafter. Jo Barrick administers the grant funded study for the City Council budget planning.
