The Shafter Salvation Army reports emergency relief for 360 local individuals in 1947, led by Rev. Wm. S. Harper. Funds totaling 685 dollars were spent, with about 450 dollars in used clothing distributed, and 4,000 dollars raised across Shafter and Buttonwillow. Buttonwillow plans its own relief group with 200 dollars set aside.

Two Shafter men Rolf Jacobsen and John Lachenmaier told how their fishing party of twelve survived a reef 160 miles south of San Diego. Their boat hit a reef near Geronimo Island at 10 p.m. and fought high seas and fog until dawn. One crewman died, several were injured, and Mexican fishermen spotted lanterns as dawn arrived. radio, engine, and other gear failed but a rescue from the Joan of Arc awaited daybreak.

Firemen Aid Woman With Inhalator After Breathing Trouble
Early Sunday 5 a.m. call sent city and county firefighters to aid Mrs. Grant who had trouble breathing from a heart ailment. Captain Vernon Pierce and T. L. Kinkaid used the inhalator resuscitator, provided oxygen, and she was taken to a Bakersfield hospital where care continued. The Grants are well known in Shafter.
