Popular Buttonwillow teacher arraigned on child abuse charges
Sherry Brians a seventh grade teacher at Buttonwillow Elementary was arraigned Friday on one count of improper acts with a child and charged with two counts of harassing or mistreating a child under 18. The investigation traced to a letter found in a student’s backpack and covered incidents from early November to December 16 2005 at the school. Brians posted bail and is on administrative leave while facing up to a year in prison or a $1000 fine per count with a February 2 pretrial court date.

Brian Hawkins was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Business and Facilities Planning for Richland School District on December 1, 2005. New adult residential facility opens in Shafter
A new adult residential facility named Mariposa opened in Shafter with an open house last Thursday from 3 to 6 pm. Community Support Options, Inc. states Mariposa is the third CSO home in Kern County and will house four developmentally disabled adults, all transferring from Porterville State Developmental Center.

Residential Facility on Pace 2 Train Collision Near Bakersfield
Brent Tso, 23, of Bakersfield, escaped serious injury when his 1994 Peterbuilt big rig collided with an Amtrak train at Kratzmeyer Road and Rudd Road intersection. The trailer was clipped, overturned, and signals damaged. He sustained minor injuries. no train passengers were hurt. Crossing closed until midnight Friday.
