Petition deadline nears for Shafter recreation district
The push to place the Shafter Recreation and Co District on the ballot continues with January as the last month to sign petitions. Fred Starrh says signers support the community’s right to vote, not the proposal itself. About 400 signatures are in, with 600 more needed to qualify. The district would cover Richland Lerdo and Maple School District boundaries and levy a maximum tax.

Shafter area to host January 14 community needs meeting
Kern County officials outline a January 14 7 30 p m Wasco City Council session at 708 764 E St Wasco to discuss Shafter area needs and the Kern County Housing and Community Development Act 1974 funding. Rabies vaccine clinics will be held January 14 in Shafter from 1 to 6 p m for dogs four months and older to be vaccinated and licensed. County Health Officer Dr Owen Kearns notes a county rabies area due to wildlife cases and stresses vaccination for public protection and pet licensing as a tax on county funds. Federal funds under the act aim to develop viable urban communities by improving housing and living environments and expanding opportunities for low and moderate income residents. County Planning Director Jack Dalt says funds may rehabilitate blighted properties and create open space and community facilities including senior centers.

Shafter Plans Bi centennial Projects for 1975 1976
Shafter Bi-centennial Committee submits an official bid to designate the city a bi-centennial city with Heritage 76 Festival USA and Horizons 76 projects. Heritage 76 includes a coloring contest a Shafter medallion historical stationery and displays at libraries a high school paper issue and a community musical. Festival USA covers the Potato and Cotton Festival and July Fourth fireworks while Horizons 76 lists a museum microfilming of The Shafter Press tennis courts and an oral history program. Events run from 1975 through 1977 beginning with the May 1976 festival and ending with the July 4 1976 celebration.
