Three noninjury accidents occurred on New Year’s Eve in Shafter marking the new year. At 7:42 p.m. at Elm and Lerdo a fender bender involved Thomas Ratchford and Darrell King with minor damages. At 9:02 p.m. Daniel Ramos’s car on railroad tracks was struck by a Santa Fe train and demolished. At 10:32 p.m. Donald Ratchford’s car hit a stationary engine at Lerdo Highway crossing. he was taken to Kern General with no major injuries.
The Richland PTA hosts a Saturday January 18 1969 meeting at the Richland Cafeteria to address juvenile crime concerns in Shafter. Dr. David Cooke, Judge Harvey and school representatives outline local needs and preventive steps.
Ceremonies marked the ground breaking for a new Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints structure in Wasco near Palm Avenue School. The $109000 project will serve Shafter and Wasco members with a chapel cultural hall offices classrooms and a kitchen. Construction plans include expansion as membership grows with funding raised over seven years.

The City of Shafter collected 759.05 from fines and forfeitures in December per Judge Harvey Gaede. Court receipts totaled 11,548.25 with 81y 776U Camée from motor vehicle fines and 1420 in state penalty assessments. The peace officers training fund gained 580.25, misdemeanor fines were 350 and juvenile costs 97. The report lists local officials and school representatives connected to Wasco and Richland areas. CAFETERIA DISCUSSED Richland Board reviews three months of 1968-69 cafeteria program with 72 percent student participation and Type A lunches. Richland meals cost 29.9 cents in food and 16.97 cents in labor per meal.
Supervisor Baughman noted expenditures vary with surplus commodities and current low levels. The board discussed new kitchen equipment, higher lunch prices, free meal policy, and bidding for a new boiler for third grade rooms. Plans include potential gas cooling, evaporative versus air conditioning costs, and purchase of a 79 passenger school bus and district car.
Kern County Health Department announces a rabies vaccination clinic for dogs on Tuesday January 14. Dog owners in the area should obtain 1969 rabies vaccinations and license tags. dogs four months and older must be vaccinated every two years and licensed each year. A nominal fee is charged. clinics are co sponsored by the Kern County Veterinary Medical Association and the Health Department.
The Shafter Community Improvement Council invites all residents to attend the first meeting of the year at 7 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Hall. A potluck dinner precedes the business session.
John H. Brown of Wasco was installed as master of Wasco Lodge No. 583 F and A M with A Tucker James D Paul Jack B Hammons and James W Johnston named as officers. J C Boggess is chaplain Ted G Hammock senior deacon and others also installed with Hoyett L. Smothers hosting and Lannis J. Cates retiring master assisting. Mrs Moreau Luter was pianist and guests signed in.
