Sheriff’s volunteers ran a holiday checkpoint, stopping 320 vehicles by 9:00 pm. Sixteen were pulled aside for further investigation and impounded for registration or license offenses. No DUI arrests occurred. officers offered coffee or taxi to detainees.
The First Presbyterian Church hosts a concert in the Pressure Break series featuring tenor Robert MacNeil on Wednesday January 11 at 12 30 pm. The event is at the corner of Truxtun and H Streets and offers hymns and sacred songs.
Shafter police report Adrian Trujillo, 20, of Shafter died at the scene after a Saturday New Year’s Eve crash into a tree on Lerdo Highway near Cherry Avenue. A male passenger had moderate injuries and was hospitalized at Kern Medical Center. Friends say it marked Trujillo’s 20th birthday.
A public hearing is scheduled for January 23 at 6 00 p m in the City Council Chambers 336 Pacific Avenue to hear testimony on a waiver request by the State Board of Education of Education Code sections 5019 5020 and 5030 to establish trustee areas and adopt a by trustee area electoral process under Board of Trustees Resolutions 2010 and 2020 approved December 2011. Residents are encouraged to attend.
Kern County narcotics probe ends with 825 pounds of marijuana seized at a Wasco residence. A search of the Scofield Road home yielded the drugs and three adults were arrested. Children aged 7 to 14 were placed in protective custody as the investigation continues.
Pappys Coffee Shop ends its three year run in Shafter as the lease expires last week. Owner Anthony Cisneros confirms the closure and notes no financial distress. Tony Martinez plans to reopen the space as Firehouse Restaurant in about six weeks, with Martin and local churches to stay involved in the community.
