Foster care process outlined by Kern County agency
Protective Services handled 4000 cases involving 9000 children last year with 400 placed in foster care. A court worker oversees each case, parents usually have 18 months to regain custody, and reunification workers assist families. After 18 months a permanency planner decides long term placement such as guardianship or adoption. Foster homes are in high demand in Kern County. Sharp and Petersen families are noted. Becoming a licensed foster parent takes about three months, including orientation and training. Contact Kern County Department of Human Services at 321-3478.
