The city seeks business owners to join the DPBIA board with two year terms starting January 1989. Across Richland School District campuses and community groups in Shafter, volunteers collected gifts, food, and funds for 30 local families and five children. Hazards of the events included donations from SPCA, Shafter Branch Library, Soroptimist Club, Kiwanis, Key Club, Teen Challenge, and American Legion Post 213, with gifts delivered before the holidays.
County and city leaders near Shafter weigh two routes for rural water service including annexation by the city or formation of a water service district. Aimed at funding a 3.5 million dollar system improvement, the plan hinges on grants or loans and a 6 month formation process with LAFCO hearings and a public vote. Local officials cite no new taxes for annexed areas and stress existing building codes.
On December 31 the Shafter Volunteer Fire Department hosts a Veterans Hall dance to raise funds for restoring the 1920 Seagraves fire engine. Volunteers supply all materials and labor as inmates assist with restoration. The engine, originally owned by Bakersfield, was purchased by the City of Shafter in 1950 and used until 1959.
